Passing it Forward

I have begun to teach again for several reasons. #1: I enjoy sharing my knowledge and love of painting with others. I believe that I have been given this gift of art and I should pass on what I have learned in the hopes that others will do the same...#2: Art classes are hard to find in this age of immediate gratification. I offer them in one of the most beautiful places on earth and so my students get to be out on nature away from life stresses. I see them unwind as the class unfolds.
In my last blog I commented on the lack of art exposure and the growth of the uneducated public in our culture. This is the 3rd reason I am teaching.
This pic was from a mini-workshop I taught to a local womens' watercolor group. We had a wonderful morning of learning and sharing. More info about my classes can be found on my website.
So...if you are an artist...pass it forward...if you are wanting to learn about art...look into taking a class or a workshop. It's never too late to begin.

Afraid of Art?

I have observed a growing lack of art appreciation recently by those in the 20-50 age group. Our lack of funding for art in the schools, poor art teaching, and arrogance in some galleries and museums seems to be the culprit. Many people I meet while painting or at a show have remarked that "they know nothing about art" and rely on others to guide their decisions about what hangs in their homes...they are scared to purchase or to venture into art museums and some galleries.
This is also evident throughout the arts...have you noticed the demographics at art events?
I am thankful that some colleges are seeing this trend as well as some museums..I also have thoughts about how to encourage those afraid of art to begin to explore the arts...more later!
