Contemporary Art?

It is becoming more difficult to label my work...is it contemporary? I was asked that question the other day. It depends on the context. It is contemporary in that I am "contemporary"...it is also considered "traditional" in that I paint in a traditional way. My subject matter is recognizable, but abstracted somewhat. I paint "en plein air", a traditional method that was unpopular for a long time and now is once again "avant garde". Most artists paint primarily in the studio.
Hmmmm...I think I am difficult to label in this world. So why do it?
If you absolutely must label my work perhaps it is this: Contemporary traditional impressionism....as opposed to contemporary modern. I still don't think that says it either. I tried.

What is the Nomadas Del Arte Group?
There is a great new juried artist association..only a year old..."Nomadas Del Artes",or Art Nomads, founded by several Colorado plein air artists. We have been painting in a choice of six states for a year and will have a group show of our work in Santa Fe in March.
This has been a fun challenge for me. I could paint anywhere in Colorado,NewMexico,Utah,Texas,Arizona,or Nevada and I didn't have to get my canvas stamped or have a limited time to paint, as so many other plein air events require. About 200 artists were invited or juried to participate this past year and we each have submitted one 9"x12" and one 12"x16" painting for the show which is to be held at the Sage Creek Gallery in Santa Fe,NM. It opens Friday March 8.
I painted with fellow nomads in NM, painted with others in CO...we learn from each other as well as enjoy the camaraderie.
The most difficult part of this venture was deciding which paintings were going to be shown!
